Separating Mixtures

      1. First, drain water from plastic cup into flask using the spoon and the funnel.
  1. Remove the toothpicks from the plastic cup (with fingers) and place them on the tray.
  1. Remove beans from cup with the scooper and place on filter paper.
  1. Pour water from flask into graduated beaker and place on the hot plate after plugging it in.
  1. Remove excess water from the plastic cup with pipette and drop into graduated beaker while it is on the hot plate.
  1. Remove marble from plastic cup, with fingers, and place on filter paper.
  1. Remove black grain-looking substance from the plastic cup and put on filter paper.
  1. Use magnet to see if the substance is metal. It is attracted to the magnet, which means the items iare metal filings.
  1. Try to remove all iron from the magnet. (Using your fingers works the best)
  1. Identify the substance that is left in the cup: sand.
  1. Remove the graduated beaker from the hot plate. Unplug hot plate.
  1. Wash the scooper with water.
  1. Remove the result of the heated water from the beaker using a scooper and identify. (We identified the substance as being slat that was dissolved into water.)
    1. Clean and wash all your materials.
